Nanjing Lab III - [Work]

Nanjing Lab III

Architect: Yaohua Wang Architecture
Location: Nanjing, China
Structural Engineer: Organization Group
Program: Plant growing lab
Size: 200 m²
Note: Project under schematic design phase

Nanjing Lab is a plant growing lab located in the historical area of Nanjing. Different from the traditional plant lab, which focus on the attributes of plants them self, the purpose of the Nanjing lab is to test the plants’ behavior inside Nanjing city, for instance how the plants react to the polluted city air and city’s daily dust. Therefore the design focus on how to let the plant get interact with outside and meanwhile still remain the control to it.

In order to do this, in Nanjing Lab, all different plants been put into separate containers which stick out from the main volume of the building into outside environment. The container itself provide the ability to let sun light go through and controlled amount of air go through. At the same time, the form of landscape around the building help to create different humidity and solar condition around the building, to let all the container to interact with an unique environment.

In the middle of the lab, there is a central robot arm to take the core of the container out and  put into storage for further research about the plant. And the control room for the robot arm is located on the south side of the building with 180 degree inside view and two blob window for exterior view.

Two big C channel steel beams are the main structure of Nanjing lab. They lift the main body of the lab off from the ground, to provide space for the underside plant containers. In between the C channel steel beams and the body of lab space are the hydraulic mechanical system to absorb the impact to the structure from movement of the central robot arm.

Beijing House II - [Work]

Beijing House II

Architect: Yaohua Wang Architecture
Location: Beijing, China
Structural Engineer: Organization Group
Client: Confidential
Site: An historical factory area in Beijing, which no longer working as a factory anymore
Program: Single-family residence and creative studio
Size: 500 m²
Cost: $2 million
Completion: 2015
Note: Project under schematic design phase

During the modernization of Beijing, except for some historical houses, independent housing typology was almost eliminated. Afterwards, the new model became huge, stacking commercial residential buildings.

Thus, with the support of the client, project Beijing House II is trying to seek new methods of bringing the independent housing typology back to Beijing’s contemporary city life.  This design scheme adds a new house onto the exterior of an obsolete factory building. Inside the house there are bedrooms, a studio and a green room. By doing this, the design uses the empty city space in the air and rediscovers the typology of independent housing in Beijing city.

Meanwhile, this scheme also brings about new challenges because Beijing has frequent earthquakes and this design scheme suggests a big cantilever house, which is attached onto the exiting building.  Therefore, to keep this in mind, a mechanical system is introduced to counteract a potential earthquake.

The design attitude of this scheme is very honest when dealing with the fluid geometry and the mechanical system. This scheme tries to mix and merge these two different styles together instead of hiding any one of the two different systems. This becomes one of the main features of the design.

Writing]
